‘Independence Day’ By Melanie C
‘Independence Day’ is a song used in this movie. It is used in the scene when Jules takes Jess shopping in London. This song is put into this scene to signify how Jess is being independent with her new friend, and breaking away from culture. In doing this she is finding herself.
This effort of breaking away is heard in the lyrics of the song, “I’ve been dreaming about it, I can’t live without it, I’ve got to find my own way”, referring to her dream of being a professional soccer player. The last lyrics reinforce how she is breaking away and that this is the day that she can be independent and herself, doing things her parent wouldn’t let her do.
Such as:
- Going to the pub for lunch
- Hanging out with Jules, a white girl who they don't know and wouldn't choose as a friend for Jess.
- Buying soccer boots, with the money she was meant to use for a second pair of wedding shoes.
This is a song about finding your independence and knowing who you want to be and that is exactly what is used for in this movie. It definitely shows how Jess is being that little bit more independent.
